CAGLIARI, ITALY - FEBRUARY 10: Ciro Immobile of SS Lazio scores a second goal during the Serie A TIM match between Cagliari and SS Lazio - Serie A TIM at Sardegna Arena on February 10, 2024 in Cagliari, Italy. (Photo by Marco Rosi - SS Lazio/Getty Images)
Ciro Immobile scored his 200th Serie A goal, while Felipe Anderson and a comical Alessandro Deiola own goal gave Lazio victory away to a Cagliari side in crisis.
Both teams were in poor form, the hosts losing three on the bounce and the visitors with one point from two rounds after their Supercoppa Italiana defeat. Nicolò Rovella was suspended with Mattia Zaccagni and Patric still out of action, while Pantelis Hatzidiakos, Ibrahim Sulemana, Marco Mancosu, Gaetano Oristanio and Eldor Shomurodov were in the stands.
Simone Scuffet needed an early save to prevent the Gianluca Gaetano own goal after a Lazio corner pinballed around in the six-yard box, then had to fingertip the Immobile strike over after the offside trap failed on a Danilo Cataldi through ball.
Gustav Isaksen’s finish was weak and scuffed after a rapid counter-attack, but Lazio took the lead with a bizarre own goal.
A free kick routine resulted in Isaksen flashing a ball across the six-yard box from the left, where two Cagliari players got into a tangle, the final ricochet off Alessandro Deiola’s shin from Paulo Azzi’s attempted clearance.
Ivan Provedel had to make a desperate reaction save on the stroke of half-time, using his foot to kick the Gianluca Lapadula glancing header off the line from Nicolas Viola’s free kick.
Zito Luvumbo came on for the second half and immediately set up Nahitan Nandez to scuff the volley at the back post, but instead Lazio doubled their lead when Scuffet got his fingertips to an Isaksen strike from the edge of the box, finding Immobile ready to tap in the rebound from the tightest of angles. It was his 200th Serie A goal in 341 games.
However, moments later Cagliari were back in it thanks to a spectacular Gaetano right-foot curler into the far top corner from 20 metres out.
It should’ve been 3-1, but Immobile was just a second too late to connect with the Adam Marusic roll across from the right.
Luis Alberto also drilled inches wide of the near post, while Makoumbou stung Provedel’s gloves, then on the resulting corner the goalkeeper fingertipped a ferocious Gaetano half-volley round the upright.
Felipe Anderson restored the two-goal advantage for Lazio meeting the Matias Vecino assist and cutting inside from the left, but his finish took a decisive deflection to wrong-foot Scuffet.
Cagliari kept pushing, as Luvumbo tested Provedel from distance and Tommaso Augello skimmed the crossbar, but substitute Daichi Kamada also clipped the outside of the near post after dribbling past two defenders.
The bad news is that both Alessio Romagnoli and Vecino received avoidable yellow cards and will be suspended against Bologna.
