Silo: What Did Lukas Say To Bernard That Scared Him So Much?

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Silo season 2's episode 10.

Siloseason 2's finale is packed with nail-biting moments, but the most shocking scene comes when Bernard, too, resigns from his role and gives up on Silo 18. Although Lukas Kyle was absent from Silo season 2's first half, he gradually rose in the ranks to become one of the leading characters in the Apple TV+ sci-fi show after Bernard suddenly made him his shadow. Seeing it as an opportunity to escape the mines, Lukas set out to help Bernard crack Salvador Quinn's cryptic letter, hoping the mayor will forgive him for his past mistakes.

However, what begins as a journey to seek forgiveness takes a dark turn for Lukas and Bernard when they learn the truth about their silo and the grim world they live in. Lukas' hunt for answers leads him to Silo 18's lowest level, where he finds answers he never expected. When he tells Bernard about what he learned, Bernard, too, acts helpless and lost, like Meadows, Quinn, and Kyle, before deciding to step out of the silo.

Lukas Kyle Likely Told Bernard About The Silo's Safeguard Procedure In Season 2's Finale

Bernard Realized The Founders Do Not Care About The Silos

Silo season 2 does not explicitly reveal what Lukas Kyle learns from the Algorithm after he reaches the tunnels to look for answers. However, the show makes it obvious that he learns about the Safeguard procedure, which threatens to wipe out an entire silo. The show also does not disclose what Lukas tells Bernard, but it seems likely that he merely repeats what he learns from his visit to the tunnels and from Salvador Quinn's letter. In Silo season 2's episode 9, these are the lines Lukas decodes from Salvador Quinn's letter:

If you’ve gotten this far you already know the game is rigged.

We think we’re the chosen ones, but we’re only one of many.

The founders didn’t build a single silo.

They built fifty.

And they created the safeguard...

If you don’t believe me go to the very bottom of the silo.

Find the tunnel! You will get confirmation there.

When Lukas initially tells Bernard about the first two lines in the letter, the Head of IT does not take things too seriously and informs Lukas he already knows about the other silos. However, after Lukas learns that their silo can be terminated at any instant through the Safeguard procedure, which would involve releasing a poisonous gas in their underground city, he loses faith in the entire system. When he tells Bernard about it, the mayor, too, realizes their lives have little to no value — the founders never truly cared about them and only saw them as mere alternatives to many other silos.

Bernard strictly followed the Pact and imposed oppressive rules on the citizens to ensure their survival. He genuinely believed in the founders' vision and thought they had their best interests in mind. However, after he learns that the founders cared little about whether they live or die and would not think twice before pulling the trigger on Silo 18, he loses his will to lead the underground city.

Why Sims Needed To Know What Lukas Told Bernard

Bernard's Reaction Worries Sims

Throughout Silo seasons 1 and 2, Bernard does not step back from his role as the Head of IT and Silo 18's mayor, even when he faces insurmountable challenges. He makes many sacrifices to maintain order in Silo 18 and even goes as far as killing his former love interest, Judge Meadows. Owing to this, Sims is surprised when he sees Bernard giving up on the silo. He struggles to understand what possibly could have broken a man like Bernard, who previously crossed many moral boundaries to stay in leadership and establish control.

Since Sims had never seen Bernard act so dejected, he forces Lukas to tell him what he told Bernard.

Sims was deadset on becoming Bernard's shadow since season 2's early moments. However, he struggles to accept the role in Siloseason 2's ending moments because Bernard gives it to him without any resistance, establishing that he does not care about who takes over after him. Since Sims had never seen Bernard act so dejected, he forces Lukas to tell him what he said to Bernard.
