SNL's Morgan Wallen Walk-Off Controversy Explained
Saturday Night Live hasn't been immune to controversy over the years, and its latest revolves around Morgan Wallen. The country singer served as the musical guest during Saturday Night Live season 50, episode 15, on March 29, 2025, while recent Oscar winner Mikey Madison hosted. Wallen performed a couple of songs ("I'm the Problem" and "Just in Case") from his upcoming fourth studio album, I'm the Problem. However, once it was time for the host, musical guest, and cast to gather on stage, say their goodbyes, and hug one another, Wallen booked it.
Jack Black is set to host SNL season 50, episode 16, on April 5 with Elton John and Brandi Carlile as the musical guests. Meanwhile, Jon Hamm will host the following episode on April 12, and Lizzo will perform.
Madison addressed the audience and thanked them before the Saturday Night Live season 50 episode's end credits started rolling. The cast greeted and hugged one another while music played and the credits scrolled on the screen. However, Wallen opted not to stay and mingle with the cast. Instead, the country singer embraced the SNL host and walked off the stage.
Why Morgan Wallen Walking Off SNL At The End Caused Controversy & Questions
Viewers Were Confused When The Singer Didn't Stick Around During The End Credits
Following the airing of season 50, episode 15, many wondered why Wallen abruptly left the stage. It was unusual because most guests will remain and chat with the Saturday Night Live cast through the credits, like Madison did. Consequently, Wallen's walk-off triggered a lot of attention online. It certainly didn't help when he posted a picture looking outside a plane window, captioned "Get me to God's country" on his Instagram stories.

I Can't Believe These 6 Second City Alumni Weren't SNL Cast Members (& If They Should Have Been)
Many Second City alumni tried to land a spot on SNL but, for various reasons, they didn't become cast members of the iconic sketch show.
Some believed that Wallen's post referred to his time on SNL, suggesting his eagerness to leave; Wallen has been outspoken in the past about his support of Trump, a figure SNL spends plenty of time spoofing. Of course, speculation then ran wild. Per Variety, though, sources from Wallen's team said he didn't mean to imply that he had a bad experience on the show with his sudden exit and subsequent Instagram story. His actions weren't planned, nor were they a deliberate intent to "signal tension." Wallen reportedly "had a good time" working on SNL — he just made a mistake when the episode ended.
As for another perspective, Kenan Thompson discussed his interpretation of the controversy with Entertainment Weekly. Ultimately, Thompson was confused as to why Wallen left. He said:
"I don't know what goes through people's minds when they decide to do stuff like that. I don't know if he understood the assignment or not, or if he was really feeling a certain kind of way ... It's definitely a spike in the norm. We're so used to everybody just turning around and high-fiving us, everybody's saying, 'Good job, good job, good job.' So when there's a departure from that, it's like, hmm, I wonder what that's about? ... But Saturday, I guess it was just different because it just felt so abrupt. And it was already such a small grouping on the stage anyway. So it was just like, oh wow, that was pretty visible. You know what I'm saying? It was a pretty visible thing."
Morgan Wallen's History With Saturday Night Live
Wallen Was Previously Replaced As A Musical Guest
Wallen's Saturday Night Live season 50, episode 15 controversy isn't the only SNL scandal he has been a part of. In October 2020, the country singer was scheduled to perform on the show. However, videos of Wallen breaking COVID-19 protocols surfaced online right before the episode. Consequently, NBC replaced Wallen with Jack White as the musical guest in season 47, episode 2. He apologized, and the producers rescheduled him for the December 5 episode. More than four years later, Wallen created another stir when he walked off the Saturday Night Live season 50 stage.
