Solo Leveling Season 2 Just Set a New Standard For Animation and Honestly? It's a High Bar

Warning: Contains spoilers for Solo Leveling Season Two Episode #12Solo Leveling premiered in the Winter 2024 season to instant acclaim from just about every corner of the anime fandom. Since then, its popularity has only grown, and the series has spent the better part of the last year stealing records with seemingly every passing episode. Season Two, titled -Arise From the Shadow-, is now only one episode from completion, and the climactic Jeju Island arc is showcasing exactly why the new hottest anime has stolen the spotlight.

The penultimate episode of Solo Leveling's second season, "Are You the King of Humans", wastes no time getting into the action, picking up right where episode #12 finished and skipping the intro credits to resume Jinwoo's confrontation with Beru. The ensuing fight takes up the majority of the runtime, and deservedly so. Fast-paced, well-choreographed, and an overall feast for the eyes, Solo Leveling's most recent episode is a masterclass in high-quality visuals.

Solo Leveling Gets Right Into the Action

Jinwoo's Fight With the Ant King Makes an Early Bid for Episode of the Year

To many who have read the series' manhwa adaptation, the Jeju Island arc is Solo Leveling at the height of its powers. Action-packed and stylish with a suspense the series can occasionally struggle to achieve, the arc has it all from an active cast to Sung Jinwoo's overwhelming and incredibly entertaining combat on full display. The anime adaptation hasn't struggled to bring the series' stylized visuals to life, but the latest episode is the staff at A-1 Pictures' best work on Solo Leveling yet.

Jinwoo's fight with Beru opens with some heavy, impactful back and forth traded punches, before evolving into a cinematic clash between two monumental powers. The entire nearly 10-minute-long sequence features silky-smooth movement and impressive fight choreography that makes use of Jinwoo's unique skillset, and highlights the difference between his and Beru's combat styles.

As is typically the case with Solo Leveling's combat, Jinwoo's eventual overtaking of the confrontation is incredibly satisfying, and remains cathartic despite the formula having been established much earlier in the series. The episode has set a new standard for animation in week-to-week anime storytelling, for better or worse.

In terms of visuals, few shows have been able to match the consistent quality Solo Leveling has put out over the past two winter anime seasons, and not for a lack of trying. As a result, the series has stolen the spotlight and amassed an incredibly large fan base that consistently shows their support. Just recently, it became Crunchyroll's most popular series, and surpassed Chainsaw Man's premiere in total ratings on the platform.

In Under 10 Hours, Solo Leveling Somehow Broke One of Crunchyroll's Top Records

Solo Leveling has been a juggernaut ever since it premiered, and now, the second season's 12th episode made Crunchyroll history.

It's difficult to ignore the impact Solo Leveling is having on the industry, and other studios are stepping up their games in a big way to reach new heights in animation as well. As anime's popularity in general continues to skyrocket worldwide, the quality of shows has never been higher, and a number of series like Solo Leveling and 2024's breakout hit, Dandadan, are offering visual quality once reserved exclusively for feature-length theatrical films. Fans may be benefiting from the overall jump in quality, though there's reason for concern about it as well.

The Increase in the Quality of Anime Is Changing the Industry

Anime's Rapid Rise in Popularity Also Comes With Some Problems

In order to achieve an animation quality like that found in Solo Leveling's most recent clash, animators and studios are forced to work harder than ever before. As a result, shows take a much longer time and more resources to produce, leading to the death of the two-cour anime format. Most shows airing today are typically released in 12 or 13-episode seasons, when, only a decade ago, the majority of titles aired 20+ episode seasons split into two halves.

What's the Reason Behind Solo Leveling Success? The Answer Is Hiding Under Our Noses

Solo Leveling has achieved an almost unreal level of success during its second season, and it isn't afraid of showing off why it works so well.

Prominent figures in the industry, like the producer of Spy x Family, expressed a desire to return to the two-cour, longer format, though modern standards in animation make it incredibly difficult to produce longer shows in a reasonable amount of time. Until a solution is found, however, fans will be ecstatic that they're treated to visuals like those found in Solo Leveling's most recent episode, even if it comes at the cost of longer seasons. Only one episode remains before the hit anime wraps its second season, and it's near certain it will deliver an exciting finish.
