Star Wars' New TV Show Will Reveal The Origin Of One Iconic Rogue One Hero

Star Wars' upcoming TV show, Andorseason 2, will see the return of one of the most beloved characters from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story—and finally reveal the character's origins. Rogue One is one of few Star Wars movies outside the Skywalker Saga even now, yet it is easily one of Star Wars' best movies. Rogue One maintained the core messaging and themes of Star Wars movies and TV shows while focusing on boots-on-the-ground Rebel efforts and everyday fighters rather than major heroic Jedi or members of the Skywalker family tree.

Despite this fairly significant departure from Star Wars' movies thus far, Rogue One's cast of characters very quickly became beloved by Star Wars audiences. Brand-new additions to the franchise, such as Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, and K-2SO, were all introduced with a very positive reception. Now, with the second and final installment of Andor, one of their origin stories will finally be revealed with this character's first on-screen appearance since Rogue One.

There were several characters from Rogue One who did not appear in Andor season 1, among them Jyn Erso, K-2SO, Director Krennic, and others. However, the Andor season 2 trailer just confirmed that both Krennic and K-2SO will be returning to the Star Wars screen in this upcoming season of Andor. This almost certainly means that K-2SO's origin story is about to be confirmed.

K-2SO proved to be a fascinating character in Rogue One, as he was a reprogrammed Imperial security droid whose personality had been entirely rewritten. Rather than a cold, intimidating machine serving the Empire, K-2SO was goofy, lovable, and witty throughout Rogue One. He had a particularly charming friendship with Cassian Andor, suggesting that not only K-2SO's backstory but also the beginning of Cassian and K-2SO's relationship will be revealed in Andor season 2.

One prominent K-2SO Star Wars theory suggests what exactly this backstory might entail, and it would be devastating if true. Because of Cassian and K-2SO's relationship and K-2SO's personality, some have speculated that Cassian may have reprogrammed K-2SO with the memory and programming of his family's droid, B2EMO. This would particularly make sense given it was Cassian himself who reprogrammed K-2SO.

Although there would be something beautiful about B2EMO living on in this way, especially because he also became a great character in Andor season 1, K-2SO's fate in Rogue One would make this theory a terribly sad one. Because K-2SO dies in Rogue One, it would be like B2EMO dying as well (perhaps all over again), making it an even more profound loss for Cassian. Depending on what happens to B2EMO in Andor season 2, this could be truly tragic.
