BUTUAN CITY – As the Lenten season starts, Surigao City's tourism office is extending an invitation to both local and international travelers, urging them to discover the pristine beauty and thrilling outdoor adventures awaiting in its island barangays.
Surigao City Tourism chief Roselin Merlin emphasized that beyond the mainland's unique pebble beach, the city boasts of captivating island destinations perfect for serene escapes and exhilarating activities.
“While Surigao City offers its distinct pebble beach on the mainland, our true gems lie in the must-see tourist spots within our island barangays,” Merlin said in an interview on Wednesday.
Among the top recommendations for island exploration is Hikdop Island, a mere 40-minute boat journey from the mainland.
Renowned for its crystal-clear waters, picturesque shorelines, and verdant landscapes, the island provides a tranquil haven for snorkeling, kayaking, and invigorating hikes. Adventurous souls can also explore hidden caves, while the Alegria Bat Sanctuary, a thriving ecosystem of ancient Pijapi mangroves, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.
Sebali Island, also a convenient 40-minute boat ride away, captivates visitors with its powdery white sand beaches and vibrant underwater ecosystems, establishing it as an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.
For breathtaking panoramic views, a hike to Talegrapo Peak on Bayagnan Island is highly recommended. The summit rewards climbers with sweeping vistas of Surigao City and its stunning surrounding landscapes, providing perfect photo opportunities to capture the region’s natural splendor.
The mainland also offers its own unique attractions. Merlin suggests an enriching visit to the expansive 600-hectare Day-asan Mangrove Forest in Barangay Day-asan.
“This extensive mangrove sanctuary stands as a testament to the city’s unwavering dedication to marine biodiversity conservation, showcasing century-old mangroves that play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance,” Merlin said.
She further assured that to prioritize the safety and security of all visitors during this Holy Week, dedicated assistance desks have been established at key entry points throughout the city, including the two major ports, the public terminal, and the airport.
“We have also strategically assigned our personnel to various tourist destinations across the city to readily assist with the needs and inquiries of our valued visitors,” Merlin said. (PNA)
