“That’s Her Actual Worst Nightmare”: Jenna Dewan Talks Bailey’s Emotional Journey In The Rookie Season 7 Episode 7

The Rookie star Jenna Dewan has opened up on her character Bailey's emotional journey following revelations in season 7, episode 7. Bailey debuted on the show in The Rookie season 3, becoming a regular the following year, and striking up a romance with lead character John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), with the pair eventually marrying in season 6. The Rookie season 7, episode 7 saw John discover Bailey had texted a hitman to arrange the death of her abusive ex-husband Jason, who was trying to kill her, which drove a wedge between her and John.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Dewan discussed how the events of the episode have impacted Bailey, her emotional state, and how recent events have taught the character a lot about herself. Dewan described how Bailey has to come to terms with the fact that she was a victim, and that her conversations with John, and Diana helped her to embrace this, and understand that she is not perfect, but that she is still loved. Check out Dewan's comments below:

I think that all of this whole episode has been about coming to terms with the fact that she's a victim, and coming to terms with the fact that she never wanted to be a victim. That's her actual worst nightmare, but she has to accept that that's the case. So, her conversations with him and her conversation with Diana… all of [that] sort of forced her to this realization of, “I'm not perfect, I'm not invincible, I am broken inside, but I can be all those things and still be loved, and that's okay.”

What Dewan's Comments Mean For Bailey's Season 7 Journey

Things Are Difficult But Could Be Life-Changing For Bailey

The Rookie season 7 episode saw Bailey dealing with a lot of emotional turmoil, the death of Jason, and John's discovery of her involvement. Being a cop, John was understandably not okay with what Bailey had done, but she felt her course of action was right for saving her life. The pair's clash was understandable and realistic, and both are a little bit right. What made things tough was that Bailey did not feel John acknowledged her role as a victim, and what she had gone through to prompt her decision.

Her interaction with Diana will also have been hugely cathartic for Bailey, understanding that, although Jason never physically abused her during their marriage, he was emotionally abusive, and she was a victim before he actually tried to kill her. As Dewan notes in her comments, the interaction helps her to realize that she is not perfect, and that is okay. It has likely also shown her the importance of her marriage with John, and how much the two of them rely on one another.

Our Verdict On How Bailey's Journey Will Shape The Season

The Two Look To Be Okay, But There Is Still Work To Be Done

It does seem as though fan-favorites John and Bailey are on the road to recovery, but there is still work to do. Bailey has understood that she needs John's support but also has to realize she can't jeopardize his position as a cop in the process. Things felt more difficult and raw in the immediacy of the moment, but the two understand one another and will look to be as supportive as possible. For Bailey, these events could mark a newfound vulnerability and openness that could see her connect more deeply with John for the rest of The Rookie.
