The Apothecary Diaries Anime Showcases Enchanting Winter Artwork
First debuting in 2023, The Apothecary Diaries is an anime series that has developed a loyal and steadily growing fanbase. While many popular anime are set in futuristic worlds or modern-day Japan, The Apothecary Diaries stands out with its setting, inspired by ancient China. It also features a compelling protagonist, Maomao, who is driven not by romance but by a passion for herbal medicine. Now in its second season, the series has been thoughtfully marketed to highlight its connection to nature and tradition.
The official account for The Apothecary Diaries on X (formerly Twitter) recently shared a new visual of characters Jinshi and Basen celebrating the coming of spring by walking under winter-sweet flowers, known as robai in Japan. The image is part of a series of original artwork posted every month on The Apothecary Diaries X account to mark the passage of time.
From Web Novel to Anime Adaptation
Mystery and Medicine in the Imperial Court
The Apothecary Diaries began as a web novel by Natsu Hyuga in 2011. It received two manga adaptations in 2017 (published by Square Enix and Shogakukan.) An anime adaptation by TOHO Animation Studio and OLM aired from October 2023 to March 2024, with a second season starting in January 2025. Set in a fictional Chinese-inspired empire, it follows a court lady solving mysteries using pharmacology. The setting is based on Tang Dynasty China but incorporates elements from the 16th to 19th centuries.
The story follows Maomao, a young apothecary from the pleasure district, who is kidnapped and sold into the imperial harem as a maid. Utilizing her extensive knowledge of medicine and poisons, she discreetly investigates the mysterious deaths of imperial offspring, uncovering their true causes. Her astute deductions catch the attention of Jinshi, a high-ranking eunuch, who assigns her as a food taster for a favored consort. Maomao's keen observations and expertise lead her to solve various enigmatic incidents within the palace, all while navigating the intricate human relationships and political intrigues of the inner court.
A Story in Tune with Nature
A World That Feels Alive
Even though the story takes place in a Chinese-inspired world, its appreciation of the changing seasons feels very in tune with Japanese culture. Japan has a deep tradition of marking the seasons, from the cherry blossoms of spring to the fiery red maples of autumn. The Apothecary Diaries taps into this by incorporating seasonal imagery, whether, through its artwork, its setting, or the way time naturally flows in the story.

The Apothecary Diaries Returns With an Important Lesson That Anime Too Often Forget
The Apothecary Diaries is the best historical anime because it tackles the harsh realities that women face, while still keeping viewers invested.
With its seasonal art and subtle nods to nature, The Apothecary Diaries sets itself apart once again in a lavish celebration of the changing seasons. The series adds an extra layer of charm, making its world feel even more alive.
