Coming more than a year after the first movie debuted, the latest news confirms that The Beekeeper 2 is happening, but with some major changes behind the camera. The first film was helmed by David Ayer (Fury, Suicide Squad), but the director isn't returning in that role.

Instead, the director's chair has been given to Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes For Us), no stranger to the action genre. Jason Statham is set to reprise his title role, but no other casting or story details are known at this time.

Coming as the first box office success of 2024, it came as no surprise that there was hope for an action-packed sequel to The Beekeeper. However, it took more than a year for the follow-up to be confirmed, when The Beekeeper 2 was announced in late February 2025.

While many details about the sequel are unknown, director David Ayer won't be back to direct, but is instead potentially being brought on as a producer. Instead, directing duties have gone to Timo Tjahjanto. Despite the change, many other facets of the sequel are going to remain the same, including returning star Jason Statham, who will reprise his lead role.

Also returning is screenwriter Kurt Wimmer, who penned the first film. Shooting on The Beekeeper 2 starts in fall 2025, but nothing else is currently known about its production timeline. With filming happening late in 2025, it's assumed that the sequel is gunning for a summer 2026 release window.

So far, the only name attached to the cast of The Beekeeper 2 is Jason Statham, who will return to reprise his role as Adam Clay. The retired Beekeeper exacted his revenge in the first film, but he'll be back to save the day or perhaps save himself from retribution that's surely coming his way after The Beekeeper.

There are a few of Statham's co-stars who could be back in the sequel since Adam killed many of his foes, and it seems as if many storylines were tightly wrapped up. It's possible that Emmy Raver-Lampman could reprise her role as FBI Agent Verona Parker, since she aligned herself with Adam by The Beekeeper ending.

However, it's also highly likely that The Beekeeper 2 will introduce a slew of new characters, especially since the concept of the Beekeepers' organization lends itself perfectly to standalone action stories.

Despite delivering an action-packed and exciting ending, The Beekeeper left a lot of unanswered questions that a sequel could easily answer. Unlike many action films, which offer a narrow scope, The Beekeeper 2 could go in a multitude of directions and still be interesting. The sequel could be a prequel, exploring why Adam Clay (Statham) initially left the Beekeepers behind.

On the other hand, the story could follow Clay after the events of the first film and perhaps turn the organization into his newest enemy. Having made an enemy of both the Beekeepers and the President of the United States, Adam is in quite a bit of hot water.

On the other hand, having learned of the massive amounts of corruption that put President Danforth in the White House, she could become Adam's next target. Whatever happens in The Beekeeper 2, it has the potential to become another explosive hit.

Is The Beekeeper Jason Statham's Next Major Franchise?

While Jason Statham is one of the biggest action stars working in Hollywood today, he hasn't pushed that into big franchises on his own. As an ensemble player, he appeared in the Expendables and Fast & Furious franchises, but had limited sequels in The Transporter, Crank, Mechanic, and Meg franchises.

What makes this movie a potential long-running franchise is the mythology behind the idea of the Beekeepers. In The Transporter, there was a mystery to the world in which Frank Martin lived. Statham explored that in the sequels. Adam Clay's past and his former organization are ripe for a deeper dive in the sequels.

This could also work for the same reason Denzel Washington's Equalizer movies remained so popular. Audiences love to see beloved action heroes like Washington and Statham doing the right thing and helping people in need. The Beekeeper could easily turn into a similar series like The Equalizer, which could make it a box office success.

Predicting The Beekeeper 2's Release Date

The news came in February 2025 that The Beekeeper sequel was in the works. It also said that the cameras would start rolling in the fall. This leaves the release date pretty open for sometime in 2026, or possibly as late as 2027. Statham has been a reliable source of action movies, and they usually hit theaters like clockwork.

His 2025 movie, A Working Man, hit in March. The Beekeeper arrived in January 2024. The Meg 2 was a blockbuster, and it arrived in June 2023. His 2021 action film, Wrath of Man, arrived in May. Looking ahead, he has Mutiny coming to the theaters in 2026, and based on his history, it should come early.

Statham rarely has multiple movies where he is in the leading role in the same year. While he had four movies come out in 2023, three of them were more ensemble movies.
