“The Trees Are Screaming”: What Travis’ Visions Mean & What Lottie Is Making Him Eat In Yellowjackets Season 3

Since Yellowjackets season 1, Lottie has had a curious supernatural link to the forces in the wilderness, referred to as “It,” believing that their gratitude, sacrifices, and offerings to the entity will result in the teens being protected, fed, and guided. It’s still unclear how exactly the wilderness forces connect to Yellowjackets’ mysterious symbol, but Its power has certainly become more intense the longer they’ve been stranded.

Though Lottie was originally the teen Yellowjackets character with the closest link to the wilderness, It began speaking to others with more power after season 2. Now, the person who Lottie believes has been “chosen” by the wilderness is Travis. In Yellowjackets season 3, episode 1, Travis eats certain substances and goes into a clearing while Lottie observes him having visions. On one occasion, Travis has a vision in which only he can hear the trees “crying” and “screaming,” with these noises then strangely becoming audible to the others during a ceremony at the cemetery.

Lottie continues to bring Travis magic mushrooms in Yellowjackets season 3, as its hallucinatory effects allow Travis to “open his mind” more to connect with the wilderness. This strategy dates back to the teens’ “Doomscoming” celebration in Yellowjackets season 1, when they accidentally ingested hallucinogenic mushrooms that Misty was secretly saving for Coach Ben. The hallucinatory effects caused the teens to feel more in tune with the influence and powers of the wilderness, with everyone who ate the mushrooms experiencing strange but connected visions.

The teens accidentally ate the psychedelic mushrooms in Yellowjackets season 1, episode 9 when Mari added them to their broth for "Doomscoming," believing they were regular mushrooms.

Lottie thus believes eating the hallucinogenic mushrooms will allow the teens to more easily “listen” to the wilderness and communicate with It. For the best chance of communication, Lottie wants the person who she believes the wilderness has “chosen” to be the one who eats the mushrooms and has the visions, and she believes that person is Travis. At first, Travis made the mushroom drink by himself to feel the effects and get out of his head while grieving Javi’s death and dealing with his breakup with Nat, but Lottie starts forcing it upon him after witnessing his strong visions.

What Travis Hearing The Trees "Screaming" Before The Ceremony Really Means

Travis Is Having Premonitions Similar To Lottie

Teen Travis has his most intense vision yet in Yellowjackets season 3, episode 1 after Lottie talks about not being able to hear the wilderness anymore. All of a sudden, Travis becomes panicked as he says that the trees are “crying” and “screaming,” and then has strange visions when touching them. When Travis asks Lottie if really can’t hear it and she replies no, he ominously tells her, “You will.” Travis turns out to be right, as the other teens end up hearing the trees’ cries and screams during their ceremony honoring the lives of Jackie, Javi, and Shauna’s baby.

Travis hearing the screams before the ceremony suggests that he has some powers of premonition when hallucinating and connecting with the wilderness. He heard it several hours before it actually happened, but once he was sober again, he had no idea when the noises would return. It implies that Travis can now see or hear events from the future when having these visions, which may let the teens prepare for danger ahead of time.

Lottie similarly used to have moments of clairvoyance prior to Yellowjackets season 3, dating back to when she was a child. A flashback to her childhood in Yellowjackets revealed that she once started screaming in a car while her parents were driving, causing them to stop the vehicle and avoid being involved in a collision. She also saw a sick deer and foresaw Laura Lee’s death in season 1, but later stopped having these types of visions toward the end of Yellowjackets season 2.

The present timeline of Yellowjackets reveals that these visions continue to haunt Travis and Lottie for the rest of their lives, however. But, whether they’re truly having hallucinations that bring them closer to the wilderness' forces or they’re battling mental illness that causes them to “see things” is up to interpretation. Even if they’re not taking hallucinogenic mushrooms in the woods, Lottie and Travis are more supernaturally “touched” by the forces of the wilderness, and the accuracy of their visions makes it more difficult to provide rational explanations for what they’re experiencing and seeing.

Travis Is Afraid Of The Visions & Doesn't Want The Danger Associated With It

After realizing that Travis heard the shrieks and cries from the ceremony in his earlier visions, Lottie keeps trying to convince Travis to connect with the wilderness more. She tries to bring him more mushrooms and says it’s important that he’s been connecting with It, because they need to understand what It wants in order to keep It happy. If they keep It happy, then Lottie thinks that’s what will keep them all alive and fed.

However, Travis tells her he can’t keep doing it and lies by saying that the wilderness told him it didn’t want him anymore. Instead, Travis says Nia Sondaya's Akilah is already closer to the wilderness, which is why all the animals trust her. Travis’ lie works to send Lottie away from him and toward Akilah, but it won’t work forever. Currently, Travis is avoiding connecting with the wilderness again because of how taxing it is on him and how much it scares him, as he doesn’t want that power, responsibility, or danger that comes with it.

Travis Dies After Trying To Connect With The Wilderness & See What It Wants Again

Yellowjackets season 3 showing teen Lottie and Travis trying to get closer to the wilderness connects to the shocking reveals about Travis’ death from season 2. Upon Lottie’s reunion with the other present-day Yellowjackets survivors, she reveals the truth about how Travis died, explaining that it was an accident rather than suicide. According to Lottie, adult Travis was intent on confronting the “darkness” that they brought back with them to “see what It wants,” and believed that being unconscious and near death would be the strongest way to connect with It.

However, when Lottie was supposed to let Travis down from the crane he hung himself from, the button got stuck. Lottie then had a vision of Laura Lee, collected Travis’ candles that formed the mysterious symbol, and fled the scene of his accidental death. While Lottie tried to push a hesitant Travis into connecting with It in extreme ways when they were teenagers in Yellowjackets, their perspectives were somewhat flipped when they were adults, and it sadly resulted in Travis’ death.
