Rainn Wilson's Dwight Schrute is undoubtedly one of the funniest characters in The Office, and I think this monologue from season 5 is his best moment in the entire series. Since The Office is a mockumentary, it often uses "talking heads," during which the characters talk directly to the camera. Talking heads are often an effective way to guide viewers through the story of an episode, but sometimesThe Office's characters just talk about nonsense during their interviews. Even though people generally believe the show peaked during its third or fourth season, I've always thought season 5 is one of the funniest seasons of The Office. Yes, the days of rooting for Jim and Pam to get together are long gone, but season 5 still includes several intriguing storylines. In particular, I think Michael and Dwight thrive in The Office season 5, and eventually even form an interesting rivalry during the Michael Scott Paper Company storyline. In The Office season 5, episode 9, titled "Frame Toby," Michael is furious when he learns that his archnemesis, Toby, has returned from Costa Rica. Michael immediately starts plotting to get Toby fired, and, of course, Dwight is willing to help him in any way. After failing to trick Toby into making a move on Pam, Michael and Dwight plant marijuana in his desk. At least, they think it's marijuana. Meanwhile, it's actually just Caprese salad. Since this episode deals with crime, it ends with Dwight hilariously explaining his perfect heist.

Dwight's monologue at the end of this episode perfectly showcases why he is one of the best characters in The Office. Even though he can be quite a stickler around the office, he also has a vast imagination and fully commits to anything he sets his mind to. Therefore, when asked what his perfect crime would be, there was never any chance of Dwight giving a simple answer. Instead, he concocts a wild story that is filled with lust, love, and hilarious twists and turns.

Dwight's perfect crime monologue starts with him choosing to steal a chandelier from Tiffany's. Throughout the story, he seduces the actual Tiffany, moves to Canada, and 30 years later, finds out he has a son, who just so happens to be the chief of police. It's hilarious that Dwight's perfect crime literally spans decades, but all the twists that he includes in his story make you forget what the crime actually is.

Dwight mentioning the chandelier again at the end of the monologue is so funny because, throughout the course of the story, you forget that stealing it is actually his perfect crime. Therefore, bringing it all back to the chandelier is the punchline to a very elaborate joke that is perfectly delivered by Wilson.
