“This Is My Fury”: Wonder Woman Debuts DC’s Newest Legendary Weapon With Dark Twist

Warning! Massive spoilers for Wonder Woman #19 ahead!

DC Comics just dropped one of the most consequential Wonder Womanissues in the character’s long history, and among the multiple tantalizing pieces of new lore to come out of the shocking story is the introduction of the hero’s new weapon, a dagger she debuts by declaring: “this is my fury.”

Wonder Woman #19 – written by Tom King, with art by Daniel Sempare – is a pivotal moment in Diana Prince’s contemporary history, but the reason is tragic, rather than triumphant.

After debuting her impressive new dagger, it is actually turned on Diana and used to kill her, in a gamechanging moment for the DC Universe. Immediately, fans have begun to speculate that she will return from the dead and reclaim the dagger in a later moment of triumph, but at this moment, the character’s future is very much to be determined.

Of course, hero deaths are nothing new in comic books, but the refreshing thing about Wonder Woman #19 is the way it plays with genre expectations to make the moment of Diana's demise as impactful as possible. That is, the way she approaches the climactic conflict in the issue reads like she is gearing up to take down the series' arch-antagonist, the Sovereign, yet the battle ends with her powerful new dagger, "Fury," buried to the hilt in her own chest.

The dagger seems as though it will continue to have importance in the ongoing story after this issue – which is narratively necessary, considering...this is now officially the dagger that killed Wonder Woman.

At the same time, there is a clear sense of foreboding pervading the issue, as author Tom King effectively walks the line between telegraphing the outcome and surprising readers. Crucially, the dagger seems as though it will continue to have importance in the ongoing story after this issue – which is narratively necessary, considering that whether Diana is resurrected in subsequent issues or not, this is now officially the dagger that killed Wonder Woman. In other words, it should become a major DC Universe artifact moving forward.

Whatever happens next for Wonder Woman, issue #19 represents a major turning point for her current ongoing series. Without question, this was a paradigm-shifting issue, and it has readers engaging in rampant speculation about the future of the hero and how her status quo might change moving forward. That speculation will carry fans right up until the release of the next issue in the series, and overall, DC Comics should be lauded for delivering a successfully dramatic superhero death, even if it means Wonder Woman is never quite the same again.
