Tyler Perry Is Partnering With Prime Video

Tyler Perry's Duplicity, releasing from Prime Video, means that the writer, director, and producer is parting ways with Netflix for the time being and is now creating content for another streaming service. Perry made several Netflix original movies – including A Fall from Grace, A Madea Homecoming, Mea Culpa, and The Six Triple Eight – all of which received largely negative reviews from critics, but were relatively popular on the streaming service. However, "The Journey" by Diane Warren from The Six Triple Eight is up for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.

Though Tyler Perry's Duplicity shares a title with Clive Owen and Julia Roberts' 2009 romantic crime comedy, it is not based on or bears any relation to it in any way. Judging by the trailer, it seems just like every other Tyler Perry crime thriller, once again revolving around a cover-up and shady dealings, similar to A Fall from Grace, Mea Culpa, and Divorce in the Black. If anything, Tyler Perry's Duplicity might represent a decrease in quality compared to some of his past work.

Our Take On Tyler Perry's Duplicity Trailer

Same Old, Same Old From Tyler Perry

Kat Graham in Tyler Perry's Duplicity

It doesn't appear that Tyler Perry's switch from Netflix to Prime Video will yield any different results for the filmmaker. Duplicity looks like every other Tyler Perry crime thriller that's come before – a formulaic affair filled with cover-ups, betrayals, and dark secrets. While his films often find an audience, they rarely win over critics, and this latest effort appears no different. In fact, Tyler Perry's Duplicity might represent a decline in quality compared to some of his previous projects.

Tyler Perry's Duplicity releases March 20 on Prime Video.
