Romelu Lukaku unveiled a controversial new goal celebration for Roma against Feyenoord and it was a message to the country of his family’s origins.

The striker found the net with a glancing header in this evening’s 1-1 draw, the first leg of the Europa League play-off in Rotterdam.

While he usually makes a military salute and puts a finger to his lips in silence, this was a very different gesture.

This time, Lukaku seemed to mime pointing a gun to his head and held a whole hand across his mouth.

According to comments in the mixed zone after the match, this was a reference to the growing unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Lukaku was born and raised in Belgium, but his family roots are in the DRC.
