Viewpoint: Why you should exercise skepticism about the ‘food as medicine’ trend


Predictions are that the “food as medicine” movement will gain traction in 2025. Even though nutrition is one important contributor to health…I see two ways this “movement” may go in the near future, neither of them exactly great.
One is ultraprocessed food and beverage manufacturers highlighting things like protein and fiber content, or specific vitamins and minerals on their packaging and in their advertising…
The other way is rejecting evidence-based medical treatment in favor of trying to DIY it with food…
I know we have a big problem with health care in this country. Coverage can be spotty and deductibles are high. But rugged individualism isn’t the solution a certain political appointee would have us believe…
