Watson Episode 2 Already Set Up The Most Promising Ally For Moriarty

Warning: SPOILERS for Watson episode 2, "Redcoat."

The new CBS series Watson remains full of mysteries due to its unexplored connections to the death of Sherlock Holmes, but Watson’s unwitting battle against Moriarty just took a new turn thanks to one potential alliance. Moriarty’s plan in Watson isn’t yet known, but episode 2 shows the title character taking mystery pills planted by supposed friend Shinwell. Yet another possible betrayal still waits in the wings. And if this episode is anything to go on, Moriarty might not wait long before pushing his next scheme ahead.

Episode 2, “Redcoat,” shows Shinwell replacing Watson’s pills with some kind of imitation that it can only be presumed was chosen by Moriarty to cause havoc for the protagonist. But despite this obvious step in Moriarty’s plan, another character actually takes point as Watson’s worst possible betrayer. And out of everyone in Watson’s cast of characters, this particular character could pose a very unique threat if turned against the good doctor.

Watson Episode 2 Reveals That Ingrid Has A History Of Betrayal

Derian Doesn’t Only Lie For Kicks And Giggles

Even if Sherlock Holmes won’t appear in Watson, mystery remains a primary theme. Early in episode 2, it’s suggested that Ingrid lies about going to a high-end restaurant for no discernible reason. This falls in line with the previous revelation that Derian doesn’t need a reason to lie, but the episode only builds from there. It’s later suggested that Ingrid may have betrayed a semi-boyfriend by calling the cops on him for driving drunk, not out of concern for his safety but because she saw an opportunity to steal a fellow doctor’s grant money if he got in trouble.

None of this is technically confirmed within the narrative, but episode “Redcoat” ends on a very suggestive scene. Toward the end, Derian practices pretending to claim she went to the same restaurant Watson had questioned. Even after being called out on her lies, Ingrid’s natural response seems to be rehearsing her dishonesty rather than getting more comfortable with the truth. Considering Moriarty’s place in the storyline, this suggests a very clear manner in which she could become the series’ most dangerous villain.

Why Ingrid Would Be The Best Ally For Professor Moriarty In Watson

Considering that Watson’s version of Moriarty seems to place an emphasis on blending in, it’s no huge surprise that he’s so far acted by using Watson’s own staff against him. If he manages to convince her to join his side, Ingrid could become Watson’s most dangerous threat. She’s still overseeing his TBI case, which means she could easily give false medical recommendations that might lead him against ultimate healing.

Although she knows Watson can tell when she’s dishonest, Ingrid’s chosen to actively hone her dishonesty rather than try to move past it.

Moreover, there’s something inherently dangerous in the way Ingrid ends episode 2 by practicing her lies in the mirror. Although she knows Watson can tell when she’s dishonest, Ingrid’s chosen to actively hone her dishonesty rather than try to move past it. If future episodes of Watson pit the two characters against each other, Ingrid’s arguably the smartest character in Watson's staff who could easily give him a run for his money. Moriarty likely already knows this, so it may only be a matter of time before he attempts courting Ingrid to his side.
