Watson Season 2 Confirmed After CBS' Sherlock Holmes Show Debuted To Season-High Ratings
Watson will continue solving mysteries in further episodes. The CBS series, which was created by Elementary executive producer Craig Sweeny, is a modernized story featuring the characters from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, following Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) solving medical mysteries in Pittsburgh after the death of Holmes (the voice of Matt Berry). The show's premiere was the most-streamed episode of any scripted CBS Original series for the 2024-2025 season with 7 million Paramount+ viewers, so Watson season 2 seemed like a strong prospect even at the time.
CBS has now announced thatWatson has been officially renewed for season 2. This announcement comes as season 1 is still ongoing, with episode 9 of the 13-episode season set to premiere on March 30, leading up to a season finale set to air in two parts on May 4 and May 11. The new episodes will premiere during the 2025-2026 season and will also be available to stream on Paramount+.
What This Means For Watson
The Show Is A Bona Fide Hit
This renewal proves that, even though series' ratings tend to naturally drop after their premiere episodes, the new Sherlock Holmes-inspired show is maintaining solid-enough viewership even midway through its freshman season that CBS wants to keep it in their lineup. This early renewal also most likely gives producers ample time to secure the returns of various members of the Watson cast. While the majority of the main cast is likely already contracted to appear in season 2, important recurring and guest stars include Berry, Randall Park as Moriarty, and Whoopie Van Raam as Irene Adler.
In addition to Chestnut, Watson also stars Eve Harlow, Peter Mark Kendall, Inga Schlingmann, Ritchie Coste, and Rochelle Aytes.
This renewal also shows that Watson is on very solid footing. While it joins an upcoming slate that already includes 17 other series such as Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Matlock, and Tracker, the network has recently cancelled some of their most notable series, including S.W.A.T., and the FBI spinoffs Most Wanted and International. In fact, S.W.A.T. has been cancelled for the second time, as it was previously cancelled ahead of season 7, only for that decision to be reversed.
Our Take On Watson Season 2 Being Renewed
Moriarty Has More Room To Enact His Plans
Now that Watson is set to return, it casts doubt upon whether Moriarty's villainous plan will be thwarted by the end of the season. However, given the fact that the season finale is just over a month away, it was most likely fully planned before the renewal decision was made, meaning that the overarching story of season 1 will probably reach a conclusive end, though it will amost undoubtedly leave the door open for Moriarty or his disciples to continue to plague Watson in other ways down the road.
Watson season 1 airs on CBS on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.
