"What Do They Do In The Dark?" Andor Stars Discuss What Fans Are Calling "The Weirdest Couple You'll See On Screen This Year"

Andor stars Denise Gough and Kyle Soller delighted fans in season 1 as ISB agent Dedra Meero and the Andor-obsessed Syril Karn. The end of Andor season 1 set up an unlikely romance between the two, and clips from season 2 have confirmed their relationship has progressed. Fans are watching the scenes in amazement, openly dubbing them the weirdest couple we're going to see on TV this year.

ScreenRant's Ash Crossan had a unique chance to speak to Gough and Soller, in which they reflected on the strangeness of the relationship. "It's weird as all get out," Gough admitted. "It creeps me out. Yeah. It creeps me out. I was so fearful of this idea that she would be rescued, and then she'd fall in love, because so often that just means the end of your storyline as a strong woman in anything." Fortunately, that wasn't the case.

"The writers are too sophisticated for that, and Tony [Gilroy] is too sophisticated. So we meet them in this kind of arrangement that they have now, but they're both still very much Syril and Dedra. And then you have to watch them navigate around each other while maintaining who they are. It, it's not what I would like for a relationship. It sort of also makes sense that they're in each other's orbit like that, right?"

"What do they do in the dark?" Soller quipped, reflecting on the above clip. Gough laughed, and recalled the first meeting between Dedra and Syril, in which Dedra threatened him with a chunk of machinery. "Even in that confrontation after the riot... you're in this weird little Star Wars cupboard and they confront each other, but it was even like, how do we interact in this space? They're so antisocial and they can't really read other people's cues, and it was actually a joy to try and figure out how can these people live together?"

Andor Fans Are Embracing The Weirdness Of Dedra & Syril

Disney Star Wars hasn't really done much romance, but there's clearly a lot more in Andor season 2. Amusingly, the fans seem totally behind Syril and Dedra - embracing the weirdness.

Both Gough and Soller have met with fans, and been amazed at the reaction they get. "I've been to a few things where I couldn't tell whether people were just nervous," Gough admitted. "They were excited, but there was this kind of, this feeling that they didn't want to overstay their welcome in front of someone from the Empire. And I think that the people that have grown up with it or really attached themselves to it, the Empire is so significant as a force that they can get a bit spooked."

Soller shared his own tale of Comic Con, meeting with "all the George Lucas approved Legion of fans who were all dressed up and they wouldn't speak to me as normal. They kept saluting and everything was like, this is really, I don't know what to do here. Feels uncomfortable." Now they're at the heart of an unlikely love story.

This Really Is The Most Unusual Star Wars Story To Date

Fans are understandably delighted that the first full clip from Andor is a romance scene - especially such an unusual one.

It's all the more remarkable seeing the Imperial characters in Andor given such development. Star Wars often treats villains as either outright evil or thoroughly redeemable, but neither Dedra nor Syril quite feel that way. It's a timely reminder that villains can be ordinary people too - even if Andor's relationships are indeed "weird as all get out."
