What Happened To Akilah's Animals In Yellowjackets Season 3's Finale

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 10, "Full Circle."

The animals that Akilah (Nia Sondaya) has been taking care of in Yellowjackets season 3 have a dark ending. After the Yellowjackets season 2 finale, when the cabin burns down and winter ends, the teenage survivors build new shelters for themselves. The warmer weather also means that Akilah is able to raise animals that the survivors can rely on for food. She has a natural way with the animals, which is perceived by some characters as a sign of her connection with the wilderness.

As Akilah experiences visions throughout the season, one of them shows her finding that all the animals have died. During the Yellowjackets season 3 finale, her vision becomes a reality when the other characters hear her screaming, and discover her surrounded by the corpses of all the animals. While the finale largely moves onto focusing on other storylines, what happened to the animals is important, and their deaths serve as a catalyst for some of the show's most important reveals yet.

Akilah Poisoned The Animals So The Group Would Be Forced To Do A Sacrificial Hunt

The Animals' Deaths Are Weaponized

One of the many plot twists in the season 3 finale is that it is Akilah's idea to poison the animals, and she is the one who mixes poison into their food. Lottie Matthews (Courtney Eaton) wanted the group to do another sacrificial hunt, and Akilah knew all the animals dying could be the perfect trigger to make it happen. Their deaths mean that the group's primary food source has been wiped out during winter, when it is already more difficult to hunt.

After plenty of speculation, Yellowjackets' season 3 finale officially reveals the identity of Pit Girl, confirming the most popular fan theory.

Lottie is able to frame the event as a sign that the wilderness is unhappy and that it can only be satisfied with a hunt. No one suspects that Akilah could be responsible given how much she cares about the animals, along with the fact that she is a kindhearted person. Akilah's agonizing cries also help to sell the lie, and while there is some debate about whether a hunt should happen, there is no debate about whether Akilah's reaction is genuine.

Akilah's plan is technically a success as the animals' death leads to a new hunt happening in Yellowjackets' 1990s timeline. However, Akilah is not pleased by the outcome, as she feels Lottie has been manipulating her. Lottie made Akilah believe that she was special and that her visions could help everyone. Now, Akilah feels like she has been used and betrayed, and that all of it has caused nothing but bloodshed and heartbreak.

Akilah's story is poised to only get darker from here.

Based on the way she picks up a rock and approaches Lottie, it seems like she considers killing her, but does not go through with it. Unfortunately, Akilah's story is poised to only get darker from here, since she is not one of Yellowjackets' confirmed adult survivors, unless her survival has been kept a secret. For now, though, Akilah seems to feel trapped by Lottie's power and dogma, but her attempts to break free from this influence could lead to her death in Yellowjackets season 4.
