What Really Happened To The Waiter Who Chased Van & Tai In Yellowjackets Season 3?
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Yellowjackets episodes 1 & 2.
An innocent waiter has a dark ending in the Yellowjackets season 3 premiere. The waiter is connected to the stories of Taissa "Tai" Turner (Tawny Cypress) and Vanessa "Van" Palmer (Lauren Ambrose) in Yellowjackets' present-day timeline. As seen with teenage Tai (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and teenage Van (Liv Hewson), the two characters have a strong and romantic bond that goes back many years. Yellowjackets season 2 saw them reuniting as adults and rekindling their relationship.
Tai has now put her political career behind her and is focused on enjoying the time she has with Van. Their time feels limited due to Van's terminal cancer diagnosis and Tai wants to make the most of their relationship while they still can. This includes taking Van out to eat at an upscale restaurant. With both characters unimpressed, and in a moment of exciting impulsivity, Tai and Van decide to leave the restaurant without paying, a decision that is followed by Yellowjackets' signature darkness.
Tai & Van's Waiter Had A Heart Attack While Chasing Them In Yellowjackets Season 3
Tai & Van Do Not See It Happen
After exiting the restaurant, Tai and Van are chased by their waiter as the Yellowjackets season 3 soundtrack plays "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany. Tai and Van run away before the waiter is almost hit by a bus, and he then falls to the ground and dies from a fatal heart attack. When Tai goes to the restaurant the next day to pay, she notices a framed picture of the waiter surrounded by candles, and is informed that he died during his shift last night.
Panicked by the unintentional role that Tai played in the waiter's death, she runs out of the restaurant before paying. During Yellowjackets season 3, episode 2's ending, Tai does not tell Van about what she discovered, and pretends that everything went normally when she went to pay at the restaurant. This means that Van currently does not know about the waiter's death heading into episode 3.
Yellowjackets Hints At A More Supernatural Cause Of The Waiter's Death
The Waiter May Be Another Sacrifice For The Wilderness
Between the Man with No Eyes appearing and the unnaturally quick death that occurs, it is suggested that the wilderness may have had a hand in the waiter's death. Lottie Matthews (Simone Kessell) said after the death of Natalie (Juliette Lewis) in the season 2 finale that the wilderness was pleased. Perhaps the wilderness is pleased by Tai and Van presenting another sacrifice to it, this time in the form of the waiter.
The waiter joins the ranks of Adam Martin (Peter Gadiot) and Kevyn Tan (Alex Wyndham) as ultimately innocent individuals who have died because of the survivors in Yellowjackets' present-day timeline.
Even if the waiter did die of natural causes, his death demonstrates that the Yellowjacket survivors are still inflicting harm on those around them, even when outside the wilderness, due to their recklessness. Tai and Van attempt to relive their teenage years and recapture the thrilling feeling of being impulsive and irresponsible, only for their actions to lead to the death of an innocent man. The waiter joins the ranks of Adam Martin (Peter Gadiot) and Kevyn Tan (Alex Wyndham) as ultimately innocent individuals who have died because of the survivors in Yellowjackets' present-day timeline.
