What Time The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 1 Releases On HBO & Max

HBO's television series The Last of Us is set to return for its sophomore season in a few days. Based on the video game of the same name, The Last of Us follows the characters Joel and Ellie as they attempt to make their way West. While Joel begins the season looking for his brother, Tommy, after learning that Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps virus, he realizes that she could be the key to gaining a cure. Along their path, the two face various obstacles that, while bringing them closer, also highlight just how dangerous their world is.

The Last of Us received critical acclaim during its first season. It has maintained its high Rotten Tomatoes score since then, and the series has received numerous awards, including eight Emmy Awards and two SAG awards. Unsurprisingly, The Last of Us season 2 has an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes score to match its predecessor. Knowing its high ratings and that it will follow the intense plot of part 2 of the video game, The Last of Us season 2 will likely be worth the wait when it premieres this weekend.

What To Expect From The Last Of Us Season 2, Episode 1

The Show Will Pick Up Five Years After Season 1 Ended

The new season will pick up five years after the end of the first season. In The Last of Us's season 1 ending, Joel decided to save Ellie and kill the Fireflies, essentially ending the search for a cure. When she asked about what happened, Joel then lied to Ellie to protect her from what he had done and what the Fireflies were planning to do to her. Current information about season 2 has teased how their relationship has become strained in the intervening years, with Ellie finding out the truth.

As expected, The Last of Us season 2 will also introduce the major new character, Abby. Season 2 will reflect on the consequences of the characters' actions and how revenge plays a big role, with Abby being a huge signifier of that. The Last of Us's season 2 trailer hints at what looks like an all-out war between the survivors and the Cordyceps zombies, which look more threatening than ever. Beyond that, trouble is brewing between multiple new human groups as well, specifically the WLF and the Seraphites, in which the series' main characters will become entangled.

How Many Episodes Are In The Last Of Us Season 2

Season 2 Will Have 7 Episodes

The Last of Us Season 1 had 9, but The Last of Us season 2 will have only 7 episodes. While this might sound like the new season will be more condensed than the first, the reduced episode count actually points to the opposite for one reason. The events of The Last of Us Part II game will be split across multiple seasons. It is still unknown when exactly in the game's events the season will end, though it will become clearer in the coming weeks. The Last of Us will air weekly until the finale on May 25, 2025.
