"What Was I Thinking?": Dennis Quaid Regrets Missing Out On Kevin Costner's Sports Movie Two Years After Wyatt Earp

Dennis Quaid and Kevin Costner have starred in some of the greatest sports movies ever made. Though Quaid's first sports movie was 1983's Tough Enough, he is better known for playing the baseball pitcher Jim Morris in The Rookie, which often ranks among the most inspiring movies ever made. He's also played an aging quarterback in Any Given Sunday and a football coach in The Express: The Ernie Davis Story. In 2023, he played a golfer in The Long Game and the father of a handicapped baseball player in The Hill.

Kevin Costner has also starred in some of the best baseball movies ever made, Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, which were released in consecutive years and are credited with solidifying his A-list status. He's also starred in For Love of the Game, playing an aging pitcher who throws a perfect game, and The Upside of Anger, playing a retired professional baseball player. Costner and Quaid have starred alongside each other once in their careers, but it wasn't baseball or sports-related, as it was the 1994 Western, Wyatt Earp.

He Regrets Missing Out On Kevin Costner's Sports Movie

Two years after Wyatt Earp, Dennis Quaid was offered the chance to star alongside Kevin Costner once again in Tin Cup in the role of the rival golfer, which eventually went to Don Johnson. Quaid turned down the offer due to another commitment, which, considering the timing, could have been either Dragonheart, Gang Related, or Switchback. Quaid clearly regrets the decision since he considers Tin Cup "one of the best golf movies ever made." However, he did star in another golf movie, The Long Game, nearly three decades later.
