Why Budge Told Halsey Good Luck In Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 4

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dark Winds season 3, episode 4.At the start of Dark Winds season 3, episode 4, Budge de Baca (Raoul Max Trujillo) told Halsey (Phil Burke) "good luck," but it wasn't entirely clear what he meant by that. The cast of Dark Winds season 3 has been split between two separate investigations, but those investigations are getting closer and closer together each week. As Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) continues investigating Tom Spenser (Bruce Greenwood), Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) have almost found a connection between him and their strange farmers: Budge de Baca.

Halsey and the rest of the "farmers" were running from the police after the ending of Dark Winds season 3, episode 3. Leaphorn and Chee discovered that they were involved in drug trafficking, and, thanks to the picture of Bernadette they found on the land, they connected Halsey to Bernadette's ongoing investigation. Even though Halsey found himself at the center of this massive conspiracy and was actively running from the police, he took the time to stop and call Budge, only to get nothing but "good luck" as a response. It was a confusing moment, but it had a hidden meaning in Dark Winds season 3, episode 4.

Budge's "Good Luck" Comment To Halsey In Dark Winds Season 3, Episode 4 Explained

Budge Wasn't Telling Halsey To Avoid The Police, He Was Telling Halsey He Couldn't Hide

When Budge told Halsey "good luck," it wasn't a measure of support for his peer. Budge wasn't telling Halsey good luck in avoiding the police, he was sarcastically telling Halsey, "good luck hiding from me." Budge knew that even if the police got to him first, Halsey wasn't going to be alive much longer. As evidenced by the end of Dark Winds season 3, episode 4, Halsey had a very good reason to be afraid of Budge. It's not entirely clear who did it, but somebody slashed Halsey's throat through the bars of his holding cell, and it seems Budge made good on his original threat.

An interesting detail in Halsey's phone call reveals that he wasn't really afraid of the police, he was afraid of Budge. Halsey was actively being chased by the police, and that he was wanted for both drug smuggling and murder. Those are incredibly serious charges, and most fugitives would continue to run as far as they could, likely to Mexico, to escape capture. Halsey, however, stopped at a gas station and risked being caught by the police just to call Budge. He barely made it out of there, and if he hadn't stopped, he could have avoided the police entirely.

It was inevitable that Leaphorn and Chee's case and Bernadette's case would come together in Dark Winds season 3, and the chili farmers are the key.

The reason Halsey risked being caught was because he was trying to get Budge to let him go. The entire phone call was aimed at trying to convince Budge that there was no reason to worry about Tom Spenser being implicated, and thus no reason for Budge to go after Halsey. It was almost like jail was a secondary worry for Halsey, and that he would have been fine with going to prison as long as he convinced Budge to let him go. Anyone with that kind of an effect on someone is definitely bad news, and Budge is shaping up to be Dark Winds season 3's biggest villain.

Though he's basically Tom Spenser's "fixer" - a man who gets sent to tie up loose ends and cover Spenser's tracks - Budge is paradoxically the best lead Manuelito and Chee have so far. Budge has succeeded in keeping Spenser's trafficking ring secret so far, as he killed Wade and likely murdered Halsey, both of whom could have blown this case wide open if the police got them. However, Budge is also the main subject of both Bernadette's and Chee's suspicions. Because of him, Bernadette is likely going to investigate the Mexican oil refinery next week.

Budge has also made a few big mistakes already. Returning Bernadette's gun was a big one, as that only reignited her interest in investigating Spenser and trying to figure out who Budge is. Taking her to the Mexican restaurant was another big mistake, as Budge's threats were no match for Bernadette's stubbornness and dedication to finding the truth. When all is said and done, Budge may actually prove to be the most important part of proving that Tom Spenser is a criminal in Dark Winds season 3.
