Wonder Woman Debuts Several New Weapons That Make the Lasso of Truth Rather Outdated

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Absolute Wonder Woman #6!The newest Wonder Woman dives into the surprising mythology behind her enchanted weapons. Absolute Wonder Woman made a huge splash when she debuted and revealed her impressive armory while fighting the powerful Tetracide. Now that she's back home in the Underworld, Absolute Wonder Woman is revealing the origins of one particularly amazing weapon.

In Absolute Wonder Woman #6 by Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis, Wonder Woman is called to stand before Hades. After disarming herself, Hades notes all the weapons Diana has on her, including three colorful lassos. Hades asks Absolute Wonder Woman about the Nemesis Lasso and where it came from.

Diana reveals that Nemesis was created, in part, thanks to Prometheus, whom she temporarily freed from his imprisonment in exchange for his enchanted blood. Absolute Wonder Woman's lasso was also made from the flesh of the Last Basilisk, a powerful being Diana put down for taking innocent lives.

Unlike the Prime Wonder Woman, the Absolute Universe's Diana was raised in Hell instead of Themyscira and raised by the witch Circe. She was raised learning powerful, dark magics and blood rituals to survive the harsh terrain (though she remained the charming and loving hero she always is). Eventually, she came to the realm of the living and helped protect the world from the Tetracide. Absolute Wonder Woman debuted a number of impressive weapons, including her massive Athena Blade, as well as the Nemesis Lasso, which could make those bound by it feel the weight of their sins.

Of course, the Prime Universe's Wonder Woman has a lasso as well, but her Absolute variant has her beat with three lassos (granted, Diana's daughter Trinity will eventually hold handle three). But what's more fascinating than how many lassos Absolute Wonder Woman has, it's how they were made. Though fans have yet to discover the origins of the other two, this issue serves as a wonderful insight into how Nemesis was fashioned from two powerful, legendary figures. And that’s just one item in Absolute Wonder Woman’s arsenal. The rest undoubtedly have equally grand and epic lore behind them.

Absolute Wonder Woman had a much rougher origin than the mainline Diana, and her weapons, while cool, represent the struggles she faced in the Underworld. Nemesis' strength was born out of necessity and the lasso showcases the lengths she was willing to go to survive. While fans will have to wait a bit longer to find out the secrets of her other two lassos, as well as her other armaments, this glimpse into Diana's past reveals that these weapons weren't just made to look cool. Absolute Wonder Woman's weapons were painstakingly made to give Diana a fighting chance in the Absolute Universe.
