X-Men is Retiring Professor Xavier, So He Can Start Its Biggest Alien War in History

Warning! Spoilers ahead for X-Manhunt Omega #1!Professor Xaviermay be done with the X-Men, but Marvel is definitely not done with the classic X-Men icon, as Charles Xavier and his recently revived wife Lilandra are taking to the stars to save their daughter and start Marvel’s next big climactic event. There is growing unrest within the Marvel Universe, and many heavy hitters and intergalactic heroes are gearing up for an all-out war.

In the conclusion to X-Manhunt Omega #1 – written by Murewa Ayodele and Gail Simone, with art by Enid Balám, Gleb Melnikov, and Federica Mancin – it is revealed that Charles Xavier’s goal of saving his daughter from a Shi’ar insurrection will be a part of Jonathan Hickman’s upcoming Imperial saga.

Not only has the Shi’ar empire been upended, but seeds have been planted across the cosmos, and galactic leaders are slated to fall. Many of Marvel’s biggest intergalactic heroes, such as the Phoenix, Star-Lord, and Nova, will all play a part.

Despite Charles Xavier announcing his retirement, his long-deserved break will be anything but restful because in Uncanny X-Men #11 – written by Gail Simone, with art by Javier Garron – Xandra called to her father for help just as a splinter group broke into the Shi’ar palace to overthrow her, kickstarting Xavier’s jailbreak. The Shi’ar rebels believe Xandra’s half-mutant heritage makes her unfit to rule, and as for who’s behind her dethronement, there are a few possibilities. On top of the Shi’ar’s insurrection, the galaxy's major governing body of the eight known galaxies, the Galactic Council, has been compromised.

When Jean Grey permanently merged with the Phoenix and returned to police the galaxy, her return brought about uncertainty and distrust towards the cosmic entity that once nearly annihilated the cosmos. It’s revealed in Phoenix #4 by Stephanie Phillips and Alessandro Miracolo, that Gladiator of the Shi’ar’s Royal Guard attempted and failed to eliminate the Phoenix, and now, the Galactic Council has enlisted the infamous genocidal warlord, Thanos. Gladiator may be behind the Shi’ar’s revolt, however, Gladiator has mainly stayed loyal to the royal bloodline, whereas the mad titan, with his lust for galactic conquest, is the likely mastermind.

There is already growing turmoil throughout the Marvel Universe’s Galactic governing bodies; however, Charles Xavier and Lilandra’s daughter, Xandra, being overthrown as the Shi’ar empress will undoubtedly be the event that will spark war. More concerningly, Thanos may be the catalyst for major Galactic empires’ downfalls, and the power vacuum that results from it will be devastating, with powerful entities like the Phoenix on the front lines. Professor Charles Xavier has officially retired from the X-Men, but galactic peril within the Marvel Universe will ensure the X-Men’s founder will still be fighting the good fight.
