Avowed: Practical Pockets Treasure Map Location & Rewards
The Practical Pockets treasure map in Avowedis one of many available treasure map quests in the game that present you with a somewhat obscure clue to track down a unique item. As with all treasure locations in Avowed, you'll have to find the specific vendor that sells the map. The vendor for the Practical Pockets Treasure Map can be found in the Emerald Stair area, the second major area of Avowed's map of the Living Lands. Once you've accessed Fior mes Iverno, you'll need to track down Ector Brewer in The Gifted Magpie.
The Gifted Magpie is in the southwestern region of Fior mes Iverno, where Ector Brewer sells the Practical Pockets treasure map for 660 skeyt. This treasure location isn't too difficult to track down, but like many of the treasure map side quests, the clues can be tricky to parse. Once you've acquired the map and tracked down the treasure chest location, Practical Pockets awards a decent light armor set that increases health and decreases elemental damage for Fire, Frost, and Shock. Here's a look at how to figure out the Practical Pockets clue, the treasure chest location, and its reward in Avowed.
Practical Pockets Map Clue Explained
The Practical Pockets Treasure Map Is Unique
Once you've acquired the Practical Pockets treasure map from Ector Brewer in the Gifted Magpie, the clue very heavy-handedly explains that "[a] good ranger is prepared for any challenge, but the best ranger has snacks on hand." The use of "ranger" twice in the clue line should be a dead giveaway for the location of the treasure chest, but if you haven't explored Emerald Stair very much, you might still be at a loss. There is a Ranger Headquarters in Emerald Stair near the Pargrun Waystation, northeast of the Truffle Farm, and the map clue displays an image of someone looking toward the headquarters' tower.
While the ranger clue is a bit on the nose, the image itself is misleading, making it a bit of a challenge to pinpoint the exact chest location. Unlike most treasure map clues that feature treasure chest locations with arrows pointing in a particular direction, this map's image depicts a scene looking outward from the perspective of the chest itself. In other words, instead of showing you where to go, it's showing you what you'll see once you've found the chest — the dilapidated square tower of the Ranger Headquarters, with a balcony and an overlook.
Practical Pockets Treasure Chest Location
Look For Blue Mushrooms Northeast Of The Ranger Headquarters
If you've explored the region pretty thoroughly, there's a good chance you'll be familiar with the blue fauna and mushrooms growing on surrounding cliffs and walls, etc. I spent a good amount of time in the area, and I found them important in tracking down the specific location of the chest.
To get oriented, travel to the Ranger Headquarters and head out from the main entrance, hanging to the right and following the path northeast until you reach a small alcove with a bunch of blue mushrooms on the cliffs. Instead of going down into the watery area, go slightly right toward the tall cliffs.
Keep an eye on the tower if you get disoriented and try to line it up so that it looks like the picture on the map. Look around for a bunch of humongous blue mushrooms on some jutting cliffs and head toward them. Look for the hanging vines to the north and listen for the treasure chest chime, heading back until you see a dropdown with more fauna and the treasure chest itself. Once you open up the chest and grab the reward, you can turn around to see exactly what the image in the map clue was depicting.
Practical Pockets Rewards
Hjilde's Handy Hide Increases Elemental Resistance
The reward for the Practical Pockets treasure map is a Fine Quality light armor called Hjilde's Handy Hide, an excellent light armor option for a range of different situations due to its various elemental resistances. This armor set starts as a +2 Fine Quality item, so it's better to hang on to it as opposed to selling or breaking it down for crafting materials, especially if playing as a Ranger. Hjilde's Handy Hide's base stats include 10% Damage Reduction and an additional 22 Damage Reduction, as well as -20 max Stamina and -20 max Essence.
Break down unused unique weapons and armor for valuable crafting materials that will improve other unique weapons that you're actually using.
The default enchantment for Hjilde's Handy Hide includes All Seasons, which decreases damage from Fire, Frost, and Shock by 10%, as well as Survivor, which gives you a +40 buff to max Health. As you advance farther through the game, more and more enemies will begin inflicting different forms of elemental damage, so having these resistances will come in handy, living up to the set's name. Overall, the Practical Pockets treasure chest side quest is well worth the short trip north from the Ranger Headquarters, and Hjilde's Handy Hide is great for Ranger builds and maintaining a light inventory in Avowed.
