Civ 7: All Unique Units In The Antiquity Age
In Sid Meier's Civilization 7, the Antiquity Age contains ten unique civilizations (so far) that each have their distinct features, including Civic Trees, abilities, buildings, improvements, quarters, and most importantly, unique units. Each civilization has two unique units from various unit types, from powerful ranged units, like the Mississippian Burning Arrows, to Great People, such as the Han's Shi Dafu or Egypt's Tjaty.
Knowing what each civilization's units do in Civ 7's Antiquity Age and how they function may help select a starting civilization or develop a strategy for a given leader. Great People units will have one of any number of different bonuses or buffs in a range of categories, from Diplomatic to Scientific. Multiple Great People of a given type (e.g., Shi Dafu) can be purchased or produced, but only one of each individual Great People within that type can be acquired per playthrough. Here's a look at all the unique units in Civilization 7.
10 Aksum: Dhow & Tankwa Units
Aksumite Trade Units Are An Indestructible Force
Aksum's two units are the Dhow and the Tankwa, and both have strong trade abilities. The Dhow is a naval combat unit with +4 Combat Strength on Coastal terrain, making it incredibly strong during a Siege or when raiding Coastal Settlements.
Unlike any other naval unit in the game, though, the Dhow can spend a charge to establish a single naval trade route, giving them much greater utility.
Dhow have base combat strengths of 25 Melee, 20 Ranged, and 15 Bombard.
The second Aksumite unit is the Tankwa, a unique trader unit that cannot be pillaged and has a +10 Trade Route range. These units are extremely helpful in seeking the Economic Legacy Path and Silk Roads, especially on larger maps where civilizations may be more spread out.
9 Egypt: Medjay & Tjaty Units
The Tjaty Great Person Requires A Necropolis
Tjaty are the Egyptian Great People that can only be produced after constructing the Necropolis, a Quarter comprised of unique Mastaba and Mortuary Temple Egyptian buildings. Once constructed, Tjaty can be produced or purchased. The Tjaty abilities and bonuses can be focused on Cultural and Economic attributes, though there are Scientific and Diplomatic actions as well, and the Great People are randomized, guaranteeing no specific actions in a given playthrough. One example of a Tjaty is Hemiunu, who adds 200 Production to a Wonder that is currently under construction.
The Medjay are Egypt's unique Infantry Unit and have no maintenance cost. Further, they get +3 Combat Strength when in friendly territory and +6 Combat Strength if stationed in a Settlement they own. Medjay have a base 20 Melee Strength, two movements, and sight range.
8 Greece: Hoplite & Logios Units
Hoplites Have Strength In Numbers
Similar to the Tjaty, Logios are Greece's Great People, and they require Greece's Unique Quarter, the Acropolis, to be constructed in a Settlement before the unit is available for purchase or production. The Acropolis Unique Quarter consists of the Odeon and Parthenon buildings, accessed through Greece's Unique Civics, Ekklesia, and Agogy. The Logios Great People come with a range of different actions, such as Hypatia's ability to add +3 Science to any Library for the remainder of the Antiquity Age.
Hoplite units are Greece's quintessential infantry unit and will be familiar to anyone who has played previous installments of the Civilization franchise. Hoplite units are granted +2 Combat Strength when next to another Hoplite Unit, making them highly effective when attacking or defending in groups, ideally with a Commander nearby.
7 Han: The Chu-Ko-Nu & Shi Dafu Units
The Chu-Ko-Nu Ranged Units Have Zone Of Control
The first of the Han's two unique units are the Chu-Ko-Nu, a ranged unit that is extremely powerful at close range. Chu-Ko-Nu have Zone of Control, which prevents units in adjacent tiles from entering and exiting a tile on the same turn. They also have increased Defense Strength, and to boot, Chu-Ko-Nu's Combat Strength is increased by +5 when attacking adjacent units.
The Chu-Ko-Nu will be even more effective when stationed on Han's unique improvement, the Great Wall.
Shi Dafu are the Han's Great People. They tend to produce great scientific person actions, such as Mencius, who grants free Technology when his ability is activated in a Science building, or Zhang Hang, who can grant +4 Science to an Academy when activated in the building. These Great People can only be trained in cities with at least 10 people.
6 Khmer: The Yuthahathi & Vaishya Units
The Yuthahathi Elephant Cavalry Ignore Zone Of Control
The Khmer have an amazing, unique elephant Cavalry unit called the Yuthahathi; this unit has a higher Melee Strength (base 35) but decreased movement. However, this reduced movement speed is compensated by the fact that it also ignores the Zone of Control, and the Yuthahathi are immune to Flood damage. Yuthahathi are unlocked after researching the Wheel.
The second Khmer unique unit is the Vaishya, a unique trader unit that is also immune to flood damage but also does not suffer from movement penalties on Wet terrain, allowing these units to travel distances in a fraction of the time it would take a regular Merchant. These units are unlocked after researching the Code of Laws, just as a regular Merchant, and can be used to advance Khmer's leader along the Silk Roads Legacy Path more quickly than most civilizations.
5 Maurya: Purabhettarah & Nagarika Units
The Mauryan Nagarika Is A One-Of-A-Kind Settler
Maurya's unique units include the Nagarika and Purabhettarah. The Nagarika units are a one-of-a-kind Settler unit that automatically grants an extra +2 Happiness to City Halls once it establishes a Town. Muarya's unique features utilize Happiness surpluses to increase other yields, so this initial boost to Happiness comes in quite handy. Nagarika's take the place of regular Settlers but can be purchased or produced the same way.
The second Mauryan unique unit is the Purabhettarah, another elephant Cavalry unit similar to Khmer's, but this time with increased combat strength against fortified districts, making them even more effective in Siege tactics. Purabhettarah are Tier 2 units that ignore Zone of Control and cannot be accessed without the Wheel Technology, which means they aren't likely usable until midway through the Tech tree.
4 Maya: Hul'che & Jaguar Slayer Units
Jaguar Traps Catch Enemies By Surprise
Jaguar Slayers are one of the unique Mayan Units, and they are the only scout unit in the Antiquity Age (and possibly the entire game) that are able to initiate combat. This makes them one of the most useful starting units available, serving the dual purpose of scouting and fighting when necessary. They also have an excellent trap ability called the Jaguar Trap. Jaguar Slayers can spend a charge to lay a Jaguar Trap that enemies cannot see, and when they walk into that tile, the trap deals 25 damage and ends their movement. This charge resets every five turns. Jaguar Slayers have further buffs available from Maya's unique Civic Tree.
The Hul'che are Maya's Ranged units. These units have the ability to see through vegetation and ignore movement penalties from vegetated terrain.
3 Mississippian: Burning Arrow & Watonathi Units
Watonathi Gains Extra Gold From Trade Resources
The Mississippian Burning Arrow units are a ranged combat unit with an ability that lives up to the name. Burning Arrow units have increased Bombard Strength, +3 Combat Strength against Siege Units, and apply a burning status for two turns, which effectively torches the tile and increases damage dealt to units in that tile.
Mississippian Burning Arrow units are excellent for fortifying and defending borders but are just as effective during Siege warfare.
The Watonathi is a unique Mississippian trader unit that can provide useful Gold bonuses when establishing trade routes. It receives an additional 25 Gold per Resource acquired from its established route, incentivizing trade routes to cities with the most Resources available. This unit replaces the normal Merchant and can only be unlocked with the Code of Laws.
2 Persia: Immortal & Hazarapatis Units
Immortal Units Heal After Defeating An Enemy
Persia's two unique units are the Immortal and the Hazarapatis units. Immortals are a unique Tier 2 Infantry unit that can heal when defeating an enemy. This unit automatically heals 15 HP after defeating an enemy unit. Immortals can only be accessed after researching Bronze Working and have a base melee damage of 25.
The Hazarapatis units are actually unique Army Commanders who are an improved version of a regular Army Commander. These are also unlocked after studying the Discipline Civic, but Hazarapatis Commanders automatically start with the Initiative promotion. This is a Commander promotion that allows units to move or attack immediately after they unpack instead of waiting for an additional turn.
1 Rome: Legion & Legatus Units
Legatus Commanders Can Establish Settlements
Perhaps one of the best unique units in the Antiquity Age is Rome's Legatus. This Army Commander gains one free charge to establish a Settlement for every three levels it advances in promotions. This synergizes with Rome's best strategies, which involve establishing many feeder towns to bolster a dense urban capital city. In the same vein, Rome's unique Legion units are Tier 2 Infantry units unlocked with Bronze Working that gain +2 Combat Strength for every Tradition slotted into Rome's policy slots, of which there are four total. This means each unit can get a +8 Melee buff if you fully incorporate all of Rome's four available Traditions.
Overall, understanding how these unique units function and complement their civilizations will help you decide which civilization best fits each situation. Every civilization has its strengths, and these unique units in Civilization 7 will help ensure the best strategy possible throughout your campaign.
